My first printed New Yorker cover. In the original , the elderly ladies dress was pitch black. I’m not sure why but panic struck the art department over this. It was taken that the old lady was black and that she was a maid. It really outraged so many people within the company that they had to go in and alter the color as much as they could to make it look dark green. Even fussing with her collar. I guess that fixed the problem. No one ever said anything about it again. I got much ” fan mail ” over this piece and was even mentioned in the Boston globe. Seems tame by today’s standards.
